Ronaldo scored a spectacular hat trick to help wrestle a point from the 2010 champions in Sochi, opening his account from the spot after contact from Spain right-back Nacho saw the Real Madrid striker go down inside the area.

The goals were scored by Spain's Diego Costa (24' and 55') and Nacho (58'). The match ended in a 3-3 draw.

Iberian rivals Spain and Portugal produced an absolute stone-cold classic World Cup clash on Friday night, with Cristiano Ronaldo once again the star of a hugely entertaining show.

"I like that there are criticisms", he said.

"When I play against a player like Ronaldo, these things can happen", newly appointed Spain coach Fernando Hierro said.

The Spanish federation fired coach Julen Lopetegui for accepting a job with Real Madrid without letting it know in advance.

It was a remarkable signal of intent from the current Ballon d'Or victor, who had never made a serious impact in any of his previous three World Cups, only managing to score one goal in each.

"But when you have the staff and these excellent young professionals it makes your life a lot easier".

"We have to think match by match", Ronaldo added.

De Gea couldn't handle the strong shot from outside the box and Ronaldo put the Portuguese in front for the second time.

Spain nearly took the lead when Isco crashed a shot against underside of crossbar but Ronaldo put Portugal back in front just before the break, although Spain goalkeeper David de Gea will be haunted by the disgusting way he spilled a shot he should have gathered.

His hat-trick also took him to six goals and past Pauleta as Portugal's second-highest goalscorer at the finals, though he remains a way off from the legendary Eusebio who scored nine. And a defender poked the ball free before Guedes could get off a shot.

Goal-line technology came into play a few moments later when a Francisco "Isco" Alarcon's shot struck the crossbar and dropped straight down on the goal line.

Remarkably, the result left Iran top of Group B with three points after they earlier beat Morocco 1-0 thanks to a late own goal in a match which was pedestrian by comparison. That set up the absurdly clutch and skilled goal from Ronaldo. Ramos leads Spain while his club teammate Ronaldo leads Portugal.
