72nd Annual Tony Awards

Springsteen, whose show started as a limited 8-week run in October 2017 will play for 236 performances before year's end, said appearing on Broadway has been "one of the most exciting things I've ever experienced".

"I'm gonna say one thing: F-k Trump", De Niro shouted, raising his arms into the air as the crowd cheered for almost half a minute. "It's no longer 'down with Trump, ' it's 'f- Trump'".

In a mesmerising moment, Melody Herzfeld, the heroic drama teacher who nurtured numerous young people demanding change following the February school shooting in Parkland, Florida, was honoured from the Tony Award stage. The CBS television audience heard dead silence instead before he raised his arms - twice - and earned a sustained standing ovation.

In other wins, Glenda Jackson added to her impressive resume with a Tony Award for best actress in a play for her work in a revival of Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women".

And as expected, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two (Best Play), Angels in America (Best Revival of a Play) and Roger & Hammerstein's Carousel (Best Revival of a Musical) lead their respective show categories. "We are all sacred, and we all belong", said Garfield.

With their winking, witty opening number entitled "This Is for the People Who Lose", hosts Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles kicked off the 72nd annual Tony Awards with the mix of showmanship, self-deprecating humor, and good-natured egalitarianism that would continue throughout the night.

Broadway is in danger of becoming a theme park, but Tony voters staged a revolution Sunday night, saying, in effect: No more shows based on famous movies or cartoons.

"Your biggest obstacle", said Stachel of "The Band's Visit", addressing young artists all across the nation, "may turn out to be your goal".

But The Band's Visit wasn't the only Israel presence at the awards ceremony.

"What makes this fourth time special is that this is the first time I'll actually be on the Tony stage with my cast representing our Tony-nominated show!"
