Melania Trump attended a White House event for military veterans on Monday, ending a 25-day absence from the public eye that had sent the rumor mills into overdrive.

The Gold Star event on Monday was closed to the press, with no opportunity for media photos or video, a decision made out of respect for the military family members, Trump's communications director Stephanie Grisham told CNN.

The former model had not been seen in public since May 10th, after undergoing a "medical procedure" to address a "benign kidney issue", reported The White House in May.

Mrs Trump, 48, has not been spotted since May 10, when she joined the president in greeting three American hostages released by North Korea. Greene's father was killed in action in Iraq in 2004, which means she is from a Gold Star family and would have been invited to the reception.

"Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs. Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out", her spokesperson said.

Images uploaded to Twitter showed the first lady wearing a sleeveless black dress and strolling into the East Room accompanied by President Trump.

CNBC reporter Eamon Javers tweeted last week he had seen the first lady walking with her aides in the West Wing.

The rumor mill has been working overtime in Melania's absence, speculating that she's moved out of the White House completely, or that her rumored body double is out of town.

As Rudy Giuliani argued Sunday, "President Trump couldn't even be indicted for murder - which is an incredibly normal thing to say if you're the lawyer of a man whose wife hadn't been seen in 24 days", Klepper said. She was hospitalized for five days following the procedure. She has been meeting with staff and working on upcoming projects, according to Grisham.

A tweet from the First Lady's official Twitter account appears to put the claims to bed, though.

In the United States families of U.S. military members who died in battle are known as Gold Star Families.

During a press briefing Monday, Press Secretary North Korea announced the US will not remove its sanctions and may even increase its maximum pressure campaign if denuclearize talks fail.

It's still unclear when the first lady will make an appearance in public.
