How Nigeria's Super Eagles rated against England

It is a sign of England's decline that Gareth Southgate, and the Football Association, would readily take the deal now if a last eight-place was on offer in Russian Federation. In his last appearance for the Super Eagles, the Chelsea defender who spent last season on loan at Hull City conceded a penalty in Nigeria's 1-1 friendly draw against DR Congo.

Gareth Southgate's side impressed in the first half against a sluggish Super Eagles team who face Argentina, Iceland and Croatia in Group D later this month.

"It's a distraction you don't need, but it's one of those I've learnt to deal with and block it out".

"But at this point in time it's all about positives vibes from our side and we're looking at the World Cup as a big test for us". In the game against Congo, we didn't play our best team, but we will change things against England and play our best players.

But overall it was a fairly good performance from the Eagles with one more warm-up match against Czech Republic left before flying to Russian Federation for the FIFA World Cup.

A player like John Ogu should come in for Onazi subsequently.

However, the second half was a different story entirely, as England struggled to impose themselves on the game again after Iwobi's goal.

Southgate still has time to work on those tactical issues as England have one more friendly - against Costa Rica in Leeds on Thursday - before they fly to Russian Federation for their Group G opener against Tunisia in Volgograd on June 18.

It's hard to read too much into worldwide friendlies, but Gareth Southgate's side looked like World Cup contenders in the first half.

"Today, we played Ighalo and he was fantastic upfront with his style of play".

He said: 'I think we played really well, with the ball especially.

England's preparation for this summer's FIFA World Cup finals in Russian Federation cranks up as Nigeria visit Wembley in a warm-up match ahead of the tournament.

Southgate will take comfort from the performance of Cahill whose powerful headed goal from a corner after seven minutes will strengthen his claim for a place in the heart of defence.

It is considered one of the best worldwide kits of all time and Nigeria are going to be everyone's second favourite team at this summer's World Cup in Russian Federation because of it.

Nigeria will be playing against Czech Republic in their final friendly on the sixth of June at 15:00 CLT.
