Zinedine Zidane resigns as Real Madrid manager after third Champions League win

President Florentino Perez appeared alongside him and revealed it was an "unexpected decision".

Zidane said he had insulted his family. He gave me the opportunity to come as a player and now manager and I am eternally grateful. There were tough moments during the season and although I was sometimes whistled at, I want to thank the fans. For me and for everybody, I think the moment to change has arrived.

"I know very well how the dressing room and a player's head works, and that for me is very important".

Carlo Ancelotti - who led Real Madrid to a tenth Champions League title in 2014 - has recently been appointed as Napoli coach. He is tactically astute and would be a natural development on the pressing style that Zidane implemented at the club during his spell.

Zidane has been in the job 28 months and has already delivered three Champions League titles, the joint-most of any manager in the competition's history. He said: "It's not as simple as just staying". I did not know, maybe secretly he knew because he wanted to make it happen with Mr. Perez, not with us. I am a victor, I like winning and hate losing.

"Of course it can be a "see you later" (rather than goodbye) because Madrid has given me everything".

"It was a huge impact for me yesterday when I heard this decision". There was no backward step. "This team needs a change after three years". "It's my decision, it could be wrong". I did it as a player, and now again as a coach.

Zidane, the former Real, Juventus and Bordeaux midfielder, is understood to be under contract in Madrid until 2020. For me first, but for the squad too.

The 45-year-old Zidane, who was coach for two and half seasons, said he felt it was the right moment - for him and for the team - to make the move.

Zidane was in charge of 149 Real Madrid games, he won 104 games and had 29 draws. Didn't Jose Mourinho return to Stamford Bridge despite leaving on fractious terms the first time around? "This relationship isn't going to change, not for anything". "It is a sad day for me, the fans and the players".
