IOS 11.4 Is Out: Here's All the New Features

Apple has rolled out iOS 11.4, which finally includes the AirPlay 2 technology first announced nearly a year ago.

AirPlay 2-ready devices now include the Apple TV set-top box and Apple's HomePod speaker, but third-party speaker makers are expected to update their own devices to support AirPlay 2. Multi-room audio lets HomePods synchronize music playback in different rooms, while the other feature allows users to pair two HomePods next to each other to create stereo sound.

"This free software update introduces the most advanced, easy to use, wireless multi-room audio system using AirPlay 2 to play music in any room from any room", said Apple.

Not only were these features first teased 12 months ago, they were part of several iOS 11 betas, but rescinded from final public software update each update. Well, iOS 11.4 lets users store Messages on iCloud including photos and other attachments. AirPlay 2 support was originally expected to launch alongside the HomePod in February, but apparently wasn't ready for prime time, so the speaker had been restricted to single-unit performance until today. The new version - which is arriving on iPhone, iPad, and the HomePod - was announced earlier today, with its support for bringing some much-needed features to Apple's smart speaker. Users can now choose one or more devices or rooms where music should be played right from the Control Center on iOS 11.4. Your device should be running on a Wi-Fi connection to download the over-the-air (OTA) update. Conversely, if you delete a message or conversation, it'll be deleted across all devices signed into that same iMessage account.

For the Mac, go to Preferences within the Messages app and click the checkbox next to Enable Messages in iCloud.

There are quite a few issues Apple has fixed with iOS 11.4 like character sequences which crashed the Messages app, and also causing some messages appear disordered.

A Health data synchronization error has been fixed, along with an issue that had been preventing some users from changing Health data access for third-party apps. More issues like CarPlay audio sounding distorted and selecting music on iPhone over Bluetooth devices have been fixed.
