"It's obviously a great final for the future ahead", Zverev, 21, said of facing Thiem, 24.

Read & Watch: Thiem Ends Nadal's Clay Winning Streaks The Austrian right-hander owns a far more favourable FedEx ATP Head2Head record against Zverev, who's playing in his fourth Masters 1000 final (2017 Rome, Montreal; 2018 Miami) and second of the season.

Thiem, the fifth seed, had earlier defeated South Africa's Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-2 in his semi-final.

On the men's side, second-seeded Alexander Zverev brushed aside Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-1 to reach the final. Nonetheless, Sunday's final promises to be a cracker of a contest as two of the most exciting young players on the circuit go head-to-head in the Spanish capital.

Winning Madrid now, makes him the fifth active player to win at least three ATP Masters 1000 titles, joining Rafael Nadal (31), Djokovic (30), Roger Federer (27) and Murray (14). Zverev has won eight straight matches on clay court.

Thiem was punished for a sloppy first game that ended with the Austrian double-faulting to gift Zverev the lead.

Zverev, who earned a first win over Thiem on clay, was a deserving victor and will now turn his attention to Rome and the Internazionali d'Italia. "This is my third Masters 1000 and I am only 21 years old".

Zverev broke in the first game of today's match and it proved to be the sole break-point chance of the set. We're talking about a lot of months that I gave up.

Zverev, the second seed in the tournament, always looked on top of a nervy-looking Thiem and won the final in Barcelona.

"I had to really increase my level compared to Monte-Carlo to beat Rafa here".

Thiem was the last man to take a defeat, or take a set off, Nadal past year in Rome before the Spaniard began his streak, and he was the man who ended it on Friday, nearly 12 months later. "Almost everything worked out".

"Well, three weeks ago I beat him 6-0 6-3".

Anderson won the first six matchups against Thiem on a hard court before Saturday's match on clay.

"I think I placed myself in a good position".

I mentioned yesterday that Zverev's level this week has been stunning, and of a world-class level. "Now I'm in the finals again, which is incredible for me.".
