A 15-year-old male student who was struck in the shoulder by gunfire was in surgery Friday afternoon but expected to recover fully, officials said.

Deputies say they also responded to reports of shots heard at an elementary school in Palmdale but quickly realized there was no threat. Authorities also set up an area to receive anxious parents who were rushing to the school to pick up their children.

"We barricaded the room", she said.

The suspect called his father after the shooting, telling his dad he fired the gun in the air.

Initial reports of a possible school mass shooting drew immediate attention from major news outlets and cable TV networks.

The suspect has been charged with one count of attempted murder, McDonnell said. Both were students at the school.

Officials said deputies searched the elementary school and found no evidence of a shooting. The LA County Sheriff Department tweeted that the Palmdale high school shooting appears to be an isolated shooting and that the weapon, a rifle, has been successfully procured by authorities off campus.

Investigators were still trying to determine a specific motive.

"Then I realized it was a gun", said Jayden, 17.

All schools in the area were placed on lockdown while law enforcement swarmed the high school campus, and nervous parents began gathering nearby, anxiously hoping to retrieve their children. I think that's what's going to get to me.

He said the teen's father called a family friend who's an off-duty police officer and told him where the boy was.

Everyone immediately ran, he said. "Alexander, turn around, turn around, there's an active shooter.' And I didn't really have time to react to that because nearly immediately after that I heard one single gunshot very loud and very close by".

Faculty also provided surveillance video of the suspect arriving and leaving the school, which "assisted in the quick apprehension" of the suspect, McDonnell said. A shooting at the school, she said, has "actually been one of my biggest fears".
