Sirens sound in Golan Heights: Israeli army

Israel has carried out at least 150 bombing raids in Syria since the civil war began there in 2011, according to Zvi Magen, a former Israeli ambassador in Moscow. He said some of the missiles had been intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system.

Fearing that Iran and Hezbollah are setting up a Lebanese-Syrian front against it, Israel has occasionally struck at their forces.

According to Conricus, the rockets were targeted at front-line Israeli military positions in the Golan Heights. Gen. Qasem Soleimani, often seen as the face of Iran's regional ambitions.

The attempted Iranian strike against Israel on April 19 was reportedly foiled by the Russian military, which interdicted or shot down the Iranian drones before they could reach Israeli airspace.

Opposition activists said a Syrian army base near the capital Damascus was hit by the fresh rounds of Israeli shelling, and residents reported hearing powerful explosions. The group said it was not clear whether those killed were Iranians.

The Israeli miliary said it "views this event with great severity and remains prepared for a wide variety of scenarios". Israeli schools are operating as usual this morning in the region.

Separately, Israel is deeply concerned over Iran's presence in Syria, where Tehran, like Moscow, backs President Bashar al-Assad's regime. Syria and Iran blamed those strikes on Israel, and Iran's leaders vowed revenge.

United States officials said they can not yet draw a direction correlation between President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear agreement and a potential attack against Israel but assess that the growing rhetoric from both Iranian and Israeli leaders is causing an increase in concern from the US. Israel has not commented on the strike.

"Additionally, defense systems have been deployed and IDF troops are on high alert for an attack". The military had instructed authorities in the Golan Heights bordering Syria to ready bomb shelters and mobilised some reservist forces.

In a dramatic escalation in Middle East tensions, Iranian forces have launched projectiles in their first-ever direct strike on Israeli forces in the occupied Golan Heights.

"If they want stability in Syria, they need the Iranians to change their behaviour, to not establish their forces in Syria", said Mr Nagel, who has sat in on meetings between Mr Putin and Mr Netanyahu when he served as head of Israel's National Security Council.
