It feels like we've been waiting forever for the next Sherlock Holmes instalment - the Robert Downey Jr. starring one that is.

According to the Hollywood studio, Robert Downey Jr will reprise his role as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famed detective alongside Jude Law as his counterpart Watson.

The potential of a third Sherlock Holmes movie has been bubbling for years.

There's still plenty of time for Sherlock Holmes 3 to make that Christmas 2020 release date, so perhaps Guy Ritchie can be enticed to return before production kicks off.

It has been nine years since Detective Sherlock Holmes was last seen on the big screen, but now we finally have confirmation that the long-awaited Sherlock Holmes 3 is officially happening. More casting announcements may be made after a director has been chosen for the film. Both were directed by Guy Ritchie. The film will release on December 25, 2020. Ritchie is now keeping busy with Disney's live-action Aladdin remake, which is slated to arrive in theaters on May 24, 2019. The script comes from Chris Brancato, writer for critically acclaimed series Narcos and Hannibal. Film Company Warner Bros. chose to remove the third part "Sherlock Holmes" with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude law in the lead roles, writes Entertainment Weekly. The other film, which is now filming, is "The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle", in which Downey Jr. will be seen playing a character who can speak to animals.
