The James Beard Awards honor the best cuisine from across the country-they're known as the "Oscars of the Food World". Kevin Tien of D.C.'s Himitsu was also there as a finalist in the category of Rising Star Chef of the Year, as was José Andrés, who was recognized with the James Beard 2018 Humanitarian of the Year award.

Nina Compton was named Best Chef: South. Also, Best West Chef went to Dominique Crenn, Best New York City Chef to Missy Robbins (Lilia), Best Northeast Chef to Karen Akunowicz (Boston's Myers + Chang), Best Southeast Chef to Rodney Scott (Charleston's Rodney Scott's BBQ), and Best Northwest Chef to Edouardo Jordan (Seattle's Salare). The duo recently partnered with Compere Lapin sous chef Levi Raines to open Bywater American Bistro earlier this year.

The outstanding bar program went to cocktail bar Cure when the honors were given out Monday in Chicago. She was a contestant on Bravo's "Top Chef: New Orleans". Bacchanal Wine was up for the Outstanding Wine Service, which went to Charleston's FIG.

The theme of this year's James Beard Awards is RISE, and it is meant to celebrate the collective spirit of our community and the power of food. Other local nominees included Upperline's JoAnn Clevenger for Outstanding Restaurateur, and Donald Link for Outstanding Chef.
