Alexa is heading to the Seaport.

The space will be home to 2,000 workers from various fields of expertise, like robotics, machine learning, speech science and cloud computing.

The company is opening a 430,000-square-foot office in WS Development's Seaport Square project - a 7.6 million-square-foot development along the waterfront.

The announcement is the latest in a handful of major satellite office expansions Amazon has announced, even as executives are still deciding in which region, among 20 finalists, the company will place its second headquarters campus.

"Amazon is excited to create 2,000 more jobs in Greater Boston", Rohit Prasad, a Boston-based vice president and head scientist of Alexa, said in a statement.

Amazon has announced plans to expand its Vancouver Tech Hub at The Post, an office and retail redevelopment that preserves the Canada Post building, one of the most important examples of Vancouver's mid-century architecture.

In addition, an uncertain future for immigration and work visas in the USA brought on by the current White House administration means Amazon may look overseas before hiring Americans, Klugen said. The new Amazon office is scheduled to open in 2021.

He noted that Amazon has had considerable success recruiting and hiring Canadians - a mix of experienced coders, university graduates and people who have chosen to live and work in Canada. Amazon said it expects to grow to 5,000 corporate employees in Vancouver in the coming years.

Whether HQ2 comes to the Boston area or not, more growth from the e-commerce giant was well-received by elected officials. "This project is a tremendous vote of confidence in our economy, and will be a welcome addition to Boston's growing and thriving workforce and business landscape".
