With McMahon Sr. having died, Sammartino's third and final run with the company came under Vince McMahon, and it was one that saw the former champion return to greatness.

April 18, 2018Bruno was a true champion. Sammartino was one of the biggest wrestling stars of the 1960s and 1970s and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. Bruno Sammartino proved that hard work can overcome even the most difficult of circumstances. RIP Bruno. My thoughts and prayers are with his family today. He began his wrestling career in Pittsburgh in 1959.

WWE confirmed Sammartino's passing this morning on Twitter.

He held the world wrestling title for what was an incredible eight years, a record which will likely never be broken.

After the father left for America in 1939, the remaining family fled invading German forces during World War II and hid in the mountains of Abruzzo for 14 months, subsisting on little food. Sammartino would hold the championship for almost eight years, the longest reign in professional wrestling history, and then again for another three-plus years when he regained the belt in 1973.

Sammartino is a legendary figure in the world of pro-wrestling, and his death is a reminder that wrestling would not be where it is today without the talent of Sammartino, "the Italian Superman".

"I grew up watching Bruno. In the last few years, I've had the privilege to get to know Bruno as a man who was extremely proud of his Pittsburgh roots and heritage".

"A true friend [.] and one of the toughest people I've ever met".

"It was the first time in my life I saw weights, and it didn't seem like there were any small enough that I could lift".

He was originally from Italy, after being born in Pizzoferrato, Abruzzo, in 1935, but moved to the United States and settled in Pittsburgh.
