The airstrikes are but the latest in a long line of U.S. interventions in the Syrian civil war. The Pentagon said no further action was planned but Washington's envoy to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, warned that the U.S. was "locked and loaded" should another gas attack occur.

"By working together, in a coordinated fashion, we can definitively prevent the Syrian regime from carrying out chemical attacks against its own people", Macron said on Twitter.

"She got ahead of the curve", Mr. Kudlow said to reporters at a briefing hours before Mr. Trump welcomed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan to his Palm Beach estate, Mar-a-Lago.

In the background, Trump faces a threat from both an increasingly active Russian Federation and growing tensions with China.

Opposition sources say Dumair airport is a major air base used in a large-scale military campaign waged by theSyrian army with Russian firepower that regained eastern Ghouta, a rebel enclave on the outskirts of Damascus. She authorized the strikes without a vote in Parliament.

Trump, who in recent weeks has signaled that the U.S. may pull back its presence in northeast Syria after the defeat of the "Islamic State" (IS), said in his remarks that the United States was not seeking a permanent presence in Syria.

"No Syrian weapon had any effect on anything we did", McKenzie said.

Later Tuesday, however, SANA retracted the report, stressing there had been "no external attack" on Syria. Defence secretary Gavin Wiliamson told BBC Radio 4: "Our service personnel have played an important role in terms of degrading the ability of the Syrian regime to use chemical weapons in the future, but also it sends a clear message to the Syrian regime that they can not continue to use chemical weapons with impunity". Russia's more advanced air defense system didn't engage the allied weapons.

If the US sanctions were enacted, they would be the second such batch in just over a year against Syria's weapons of mass destruction program. "That doesn't mean that the Syrians can't re-create the chemical weapons to use again".

Nicholas Heras, a Middle East Security Fellow at the Center for a New American Security, described Trump's actions as a "dog and pony show". "The global community will not allow chemical weapons to come back into our everyday life".

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week his country had sent experts to the site and found "no trace" of chemical weapons use. What Syrians need is not more bombs and missiles, but an end to the war, which has killed at least 400,000 people in seven years. Too many duck the responsibility that comes with being a member of this council.

The three targets - associated with the government's alleged research, development, and deployment of chemical weapons - were struck on Friday night in Syria, near Damascus and Homs, in response to a chemical weapons attack a week earlier that left scores of civilians dead.

"The deliberate Israeli slaying of Iranians in the T4 base will have a response but we don't know its nature or its details", Qassem said in the television interview.

A cartoon of President Trump is seen on the back of a dog during a demonstration Saturday in Ummayad Square in Damascus to condemn the strikes carried out by the United States, Britain and France against the Syrian regime. It also has troops in Iraq, where Iran-backed militias hold considerable sway.

But Syria and its ally Russian Federation have sought to downplay the impact of the subsequent airstrikes, saying Syrian air defenses shot a lot of them down.

White House national security adviser John Bolton and secretary of state nominee Mike Pompeo both want a more forceful U.S. military response towards Iran and North Korea. "If al-Assad and his allies can weaken the SDF, they can crack the foundation of the USA military's planning for Syria".

The UK, US and France have presented plans for a ceasefire in Syria in the wake of their joint airstrikes on the war-torn country.

Damascus sky lights up with service to air missile fire as the United States launches an attack on Syria targeting different parts of the Syrian capital Damascus, Syria, early Saturday. Such a move would restrict Israel's freedom to maneuver across Syria's skies.

When asked whether the UK had communicated with Russian Federation ahead of the strikes, May said: "This is not something that the United Kingdom has been involved in".

But they later began to believe it was something else.
