Investigators say a Binghamton University student has been taken into custody in connection with the stabbing death of another student on the Vestal campus.

Joao Souza, 19, an engineering major from Rye Brook in Westchester County, was attacked at Windham Hall at about 10:30 p.m., police said. Binghamton University's website says that the suspect fled after the stabbing and now remains at large.

At this time, investigators from multiple agencies are interviewing people and searching areas of the campus around Windham Hall.

This is the second student death at Binghamton in just over a month.

District Attorney Stephen Cornwell of all Broome County, N.Y., declined to name the defendant but said at a news conference that he had been students at Binghamton, that is part of the State University of NY process. "I'm absolutely sure we'll do that again".

Souza had previously attended high school in NY and was a native of Brazil, where his family was notified, according to the university.

The University is offering a number of services for students, faculty and staff following the incident.

Conrad Taylor, 21, a December Binghamton University graduate who also serves on the Binghamton City Council, described this tragedy as heartbreaking - a disgusting crime. Hayley Anderson, of Westbury, Long Island, was found dead in an off-campus home in March.

Sunday's stabbing marks the second homicide involving a Binghamton University student this year and the fourth homicide to occur in Broome County, N.Y., for 2018.
