Pep Guardiola moans after Man Utd ruin Premier League celebrations

The ambush occurred before their 3-0 defeat to the Reds in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final when Man City's bus was pelted with fireworks and bottles before they made their way into Anfield.

"It is not Liverpool, it is the people, only one, two or three but hopefully it does not happen again".

But the atmosphere turned sour when Premier League leaders City drove up to the stadium. "We're going to try on Tuesday and in the next games".

Liverpool apologised to Manchester City ahead of kick-off and said they "condemn in the strongest possible terms the scenes" outside the ground, in which two police officers were injured, after the bus route was changed amid safety concerns earlier on Wednesday.

Unless City pulls off a Barcelona-style recovery, it will be seven years since Guardiola last won the Champions League — when Barcelona won for the second time with that enchanting 3-1 victory over Manchester United at Wembley Stadium.

Guardiola's decision to change his approach and play an extra central midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan, instead of winger Raheem Sterling was based on his belief that it would allow City to take charge of midfield.

The uniqueness of a European night on Merseyside was not lost on Liverpool's right back and local boy Trent Alexander-Arnold.

"He's probably one of the best wingers in the league, if not the world", Alexander-Arnold noted.

In the end, Guardiola suffered the same problems that he suffered from in his previous encounter with Liverpool at Anfield - where Liverpool forced City into continuous mistakes from their intense pressing and broke up any rhythm that they like to build up against other teams. We'll pick a team to win the game against United.

Guardiola has splashed out £450m since he took over nearly two seasons ago to bring in some of the world's best talent, and he stated that those 'top player's - coupled with a seemingly endless supply of cash - was the reason behind his side's dominance. With Egyptian forward Mo Salah a big doubt for the clash after he limped off against City midweek in the Champions League, Everton could serve up an enthralling encounter that could result into a shock win for a side that will feature former England captain and striker Wayne Rooney. Even Monaco last season were able to put three goals against City at the Etihad and put them out in the round of sixteen - City were unable to cope defensively with the relentless attacking powers of the French champions.

"I am fine with it as long as no-one gets hurt".

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his team are exhausted and need the help of their fans for Saturday's derby against Manchester United.

But for Pep, this will be startlingly like his Bayern Munich tenure where his team ran rampant on the league but failed to achieve anything in Europe.

City's team bus, with players and coaching staff on board, stopped close to the Arkles pub for around 25 minutes so club medics could tend to a woman who had been struck by a vehicle.
