"Our data suggest that betanin, a compound in beet extract, shows some promise as an inhibitor of certain chemical reactions in the brain that are involved in the progression of Alzheimer's disease", said Li-June Ming, Ph.D., a researcher at the University of South Florida, who helped conduct the new study, reports the Medkit.info Website. In Kentucky, there were 1,694 deaths from Alzheimer's disease in 2015 - over a 10 percent increase from 2014.

Scientists are studing the role of beta-amyloid as a primary culprit in Alzheimer's that gums up the brain, disrupting communication between brain neurons and leading to memory loss. It is also updated that with the growth of older economy the number of people who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease is also growing that puts a bad impact on nation's economy. Adults caring for Alzheimer's patients spent 18.4 billion hours in unpaid care to Alzheimer's patients that is worth an estimated $232 billion. Besides this, around 5.5 million American who were aged around 65 years are diagnosed with the disease and there are 200,000 people who are less 65 years of age.

Alzheimer's is the sixth-leading cause of death in the USA, and it is the fifth-leading cause of death for those age 65 and older. "Interestingly, the forms of tau that are turned over more quickly are also those that are prone to misfold and aggregate in the context of Alzheimer's disease and other tauopathies".

An estimated 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2018, according to the Alzheimer's Association.

"Facts and Figures" says the identification of biological markers, or biomarkers, for Alzheimer's is critical to improving disease diagnosis and future treatments.

According to the Alzheimer's Research UK, dementia has higher health and social care costs (£11.9bn) than cancer (£5bn) and chronic heart disease (£2.5bn) combined. Almost half of all caregivers who help older adults are caring for someone with Alzheimer's or another dementia.

Approximately two-thirds of caregivers are women; more specifically, over one-third of dementia caregivers are daughters. Forty-one percent of caregivers have a household income of $50,000 a year or less. "There is still much we don't know or understand about the disease because of the complexity of the brain".

Care Minister Caroline Dinenage said the report showed "the scale of the challenge dementia presents not only to individuals and their families but to wider society".

The report estimates Indiana Medicaid spending on Alzheimer's care this year will top $980 million.

The charity group added: "Dementia not only devastates lives but creates an enormous cost to the wider economy, an estimated £26 billion a year in the United Kingdom alone".

In 2017, the lifetime cost of care for a person living with dementia was $341,840 - with 70 percent of this cost borne by families directly through out-of-pocket costs and the value of unpaid care.
