Time to move on, support Ford, Romano says

It wasn't until late Sunday night that Elliott finally released a statement online to congratulate Ford on winning the Ontario PC leadership race.

A recent Global/Ipsos poll revealed healthcare, jobs and the economy, lower taxes and lower electricity rates are of most concern to Ontarians heading into the June provincial election.

She dismissed the idea the Liberals wanted Ford to win, concluding Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne would have an easier time in the provincial election.

"We have a lot to do in a very short amount of time", Mr. Ford said before declining to answer questions from reporters.

"This was pretty much the most mishandled party executive communication exercise I've ever witnessed on television", she said.

"It's clear that Ontario Liberals are going to be going into the election campaign as underdogs... that's where Kathleen Wynne is comfortable", said Omar Khan, vice-president for engagement with the Ontario Liberal Party. "It is always about who we're fighting for and what we are fighting for". Let us know what you think by voting in our poll above and sharing your thoughts in the comment section below.

Wynne noted that she and Ford are very different, saying that voters will have a "stark" choice to make in the weeks ahead.

Doug Ford, brother of late Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, stepped into the role of PC leader following a chaotic party convention on Saturday.

"Leadership races can be tough on political parties, and for the candidates that compete in them, Ford said in the statement".

Ford, Mulroney and Granic Allen pushed for the party to extend the race by a week to allow votes from those who received key documents late, but the leadership election organizing committee said doing so would contravene the party's constitution.

"I think he can reach outside of the traditional Conservative base and reach communities the Conservatives have stumbled to attract in past elections", he said, listing the areas around Toronto as an example.

In a further statement, Ford lauded Elliott - a longtime family friend - as a "dedicated mother, intelligent leader and hard working volunteer" and appeared eager to move past a close leadership campaign that saw him paint her as a flip-flopper.

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is downplaying the threat that newly minted Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford poses to her re-election bid.

"I appreciate her (Elliott) thoughts".

Romano said he believes Ford is committed to making Northern Ontario stronger and assisting with its growth.

"I'm going down to the border and putting this big neon sign up and saying "Ontario is open for business" and I really look forward to that", Ford said.

Toronto lawyer Caroline Mulroney placed third in the race, while social conservative advocate Tanya Granic Allen finished last. "She'll play an instrumental role and we want to make sure together we are going to defeat Kathleen Wynne and bring prosperity back to the province".

Wynne's comments were echoed by Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, who spoke to CP24 in a phone interview.

"I need to focus on what it is that people are saying to me in terms of what they need", she said.

Doug Ford's victory was announced after 10 p.m., without any of the pomp and fanfare that was expected earlier in the day when hundreds packed a hall expecting to celebrate the start of a new and more positive chapter in party history.
