During the Nintendo Direct presentation today, we got an extensive look at some gameplay footage for Mario Tennis Aces, which also got a release date of June 22 along with a pre-launch online tournament.

Mario Tennis Aces will once again feature a major focus on multiplayer, as you can challenge players both locally and online across a series of modes, showing your tennis superiority through both regular shots and energy-consuming Ultimate Shots that give your character a bit of an edge when it comes to scoring. There's the Zone Shot - aimed using motion controls - which can damage an opponent's racket. More than 15 characters will be playable in Mario Tennis Aces, among them Nintendo stalwarts such as Mario, Waluigi and Donkey Kong as well as more surprising characters like Chain Chomp and Toadette. We're also quite thrilled to see Nintendo return to Mario Tennis so quickly after 2015's Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash was met with an overwhelmingly negative reaction.

Players can opt for the special shots or jump into classic mode for a nostalgic Mario Tennis experience. Taking three hits will break a racket, and if you have no rackets left, you forfeit the match. Finally Super Shots are ridiculously powerful shots that can blow the opponent right off of the court.

All of these abilities are powered by energy from a gauge that slowly fills up over the course of a rally. If you don't want to deal with any of this stuff, you can play with "simple rules", under which only basic shots - topspin, slices, lobs, etc. - are allowed. As anyone who played those games - or the brilliant Switch title Golf Story - knows, these sports story modes tend to be incredibly entertaining detours from the competitive play that are loaded with creative minigames.
