Drinkwater admits Chelsea tried to frustrate Man City

The Belgian ploughed a lonely furrow as an auxiliary central forward, but had no impact on the game before trudging off with his head bowed to make way for Morata.

This calendar year the Blues have won just two league games, resulting in them crashing out of the top-four.

Asked ahead of Wednesday's return fixture at the Etihad Stadium if Manchester City were at the same level as La Liga leaders Barca, Guardiola was emphatic in his answer.

"We know the way Chelsea play but we wanted to be aggressive and dominate from the first minute and I think we did that", Bernardo said after the match.

Keeping either player beyond their current deals will prove even more hard if Chelsea fail to qualify for next season's Champions League and the Blues are now five points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

"Conte put me up front, I tried to do my maximum, but I don't think we played a good match". It is not the day and the moment to question whether we are behind the boss or not.

Chelsea's form has left them in danger of missing out on Champions League football for a second time in three seasons.

They remain alive in this season's competition but must find a way past Barcelona at the Nou Camp next week to reach the quarter-finals. "In terms of a Premier League game, it's unacceptable".

"We need to win to have more freedom on the pitch and we need to stay together because it is a bad period but all the players, staff and fans need to know that we are all together". "We need four victories to be champions, it is in our hands and if our behaviour is like today we will be champions". If I remember well, a few days ago, Arsenal played twice against them, they conceded three goals in 13 minutes. That meant Chelsea, despite not having a shot on target, stayed alive in the game until the end and they could have vindicated Conte's defensive tactics had they managed an equaliser.

"I think we made an unbelievable performance because (it) is against Chelsea, the last champion".

"At half-time it was 0-0".

You have to wonder how Chelsea would have fared if the focal point of their attack could create more problems for City's defence, while Hazard caused havoc with his pace on the wings.

Conte chose to start the game without an out-and-out striker as Hazard led the line with Pedro and Willian flanking him.
