BB&T Bank posted to its Twitter this morning that its banking services are down because of "a technical issue".

Customers can still use their BB&T debit, credit and prepaid cards. Automated phone service and ATMs restored. Davis said customers should be aware that some information about their accounts had not yet been fully updated, but would be available and updated later Friday.

"To our clients, we are deeply sorry this has happened", the Winston-Salem-based bank said.

The bank said it doesn't believe the problem is related to a cyber-attack. "You claim to "hear" our frustrations yet you don't address that which we are frustrated about".

It ended, "As we shared earlier, the outage you've been experiencing was caused by an equipment malfunction in one of our data centers".

An outage map showed the biggest impact was focused on Charlotte, Atlanta, the Washington DC area and Philadelphia. The bank said balances and transactions will become current later in the day. "We understand this is causing a major inconvenience for clients and our teams are continuing to work diligently to restore those services".

A 2:15 p.m. check of the online banking function found that online banking functions at the BB&T site remain completely unavailable. We're also here to assist with any other challenges.

"At this time, we have no reason to believe this issue is related to cybersecurity", BB&T spokesman Brian Davis said Friday.
