Could Germany act as mediator between Israel and Iran?

"It is absolutely unacceptable to create threats to the lives and security of Russian servicemen who are in Syria at the invitation of its legitimate government to assist in the fight against terrorists", the ministry said.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of a ceremony at Azad University after some westerners called for Iran's withdrawal from Syria.

Of course, the bloody, almost 7-year-old Syrian civil war is probably far from over - not to mention that other major powers such as Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the United States have a say in Syria's future.

Nevertheless, Israel immediately received support from the White House for its "right to defend itself".

The was a copy of an American unmanned aerial vehicle that Iran intercepted six years ago, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The statement said Israeli jets targeted a drone base in central Syria whose mission is to gather intelligence on IS in the area.

He also condemned Israeli attacks on Syria, stressing that Damascus had the right to self-defense against Israeli assaults.

Soon after the drone entered their airspace, it was shot down by the Israeli Air Force.

While the Russian Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the Israeli strikes on targets in Syria, urging the sides to avoid escalating the situation, the US expressed full support for Israel, backing Israel's claims and blaming Iran for escalating the situation in Syria.

Why did Israel bomb targets in Syria? "It is their most advanced drone and they did not expect our radar to detect its penetration into our territory", an unnamed senior Israeli defense official told The Jerusalem Post on Sunday, a day after the infiltration. The two Israeli pilots ejected from the F-16 jet when it came under Syrian anti-aircraft fire and suffered only minor injuries.

Syria-based attacks from Assad or Iran aimed at Israel should be dealt with forcefully, but military responses aren't the only answer.

Israel did not declare that the F-16 was brought down by "enemy" fire.

"For some time, Israel has been calling attention to Iran's efforts to establish another front on its border and attempt to build a permanent military presence in Syria, a call that has been largely ignored by much of the global community", he continued.

The Israeli military said Saturday it shot down an Iranian drone that infiltrated the country and struck Iranian targets in Syria that launched it. The drone that was operated from a base in Syria traveled 3 to 4 miles into the Israeli territory before it was shot down by an Apache attack helicopter in the Israeli town of Beit She'an, New York Post reported. DW spoke with Middle East expert Gil Murciano about the conflict, and Germany's potential role as mediator.

Israel does not seem deterred, in fact, they seem emboldened-pointing out that this was the first strike they've conducted on Syrian soil in broad daylight. Granted, the Trump administration inherited the chaos in Syria, but it can't afford to let Iran carry out its own nefarious agenda, point blank on Israel's doorstep.

A clash between Israel and Syrian and Iranian forces close to the Jewish state's northern border threatens to open a new phase in the multi-front #Civil War that has pitted an alliance of #Syria.

"It's the first time since 1982 that the Syrian military has been able to shoot down an Israeli warplane, so the stakes are really high". In the past few years, Hezbollah has "issued massive threats" towards Israel with military action.

Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus said Iran was "responsible for this severe violation of Israeli sovereignty".
