EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 Still Sold 9 Million Copies Despite Controversies

EA boss Andrew Wilson, also speaking in the company's earnings call, said Star Wars Battlefront 2 was "definitely a learning opportunity". Jorgensen said, "We're committed to continually working with our players to deliver the right experience in each of our games and live services".

At present, the only future Star Wars game on the release calendar is the action game in development at Respawn. According to Wall Street Journal tech reporter Sarah E. Needleman, EA said that Battlefront II sold nine million units to her under embargo a few hours before the call, but during the actual call, the publisher mentioned seven million units were sold, and not nine million! Even with 1 to 3 million more copies expected to sell before the end of the fiscal year, Battlefront 2 is still set to sell well under its predecessor.

Likewise, The Sims 4 player base grew despite the game releasing in 2014. Given the criticism that Battlefront 2 received at launch, and EA's backtracking on the microtransactions in the game, it's no doubt a factor in the title not reaching sales estimates. This is why EA seems adamant in bringing back microtransactions to "Battlefront 2".

In it's latest fiscal Q3'18 earnings, EA says it isn't sure when the new Battlefront will release. Considering that EA was, at one point, against single player campaigns in multiplayer shooters, this is a big deal. "We believe the growth was primarily driven by EA's Ultimate Team modes", he wrote.

While traditional packaged game sales took a hit, Q3 Digital revenue, which includes live services, digital game sales, and mobile, was up 14 percent to $780 million. "We expect growth in full-game downloads, subscriptions, extra content, and in our mobile business".

"You shouldn't believe everything you read in the press". Will they ever contain only cosmetic items, as in a game like Overwatch? We must always build on a foundation of player choice. It doesn't mean just PUBG replicas.
