"As part of the comprehensive turnaround plan we announced in November, we are taking the next steps in our efforts to move forward with a more productive store footprint", said Bonton's President and CEO Bill Tracy. The stores marked to close typically have had weak financial performance and are located in dying malls, the plan says. She was upset to hear that this anchor store will soon close.

Bloomberg reported earlier this month that senior creditors of Bon-Ton are pushing the retailer to file for bankruptcy, according to people familiar with the matter.

Bon-Ton has been at the mall since 1999.

In a statement, the company said employees will have the opportunity to interview for openings at stores that remain open.

Dan Rosenfeld, the director of property representation for Mid-America, said although the company is disappointed that Bon-Ton has chosen to leave the mall, they're going to continue to market the mall as they have been the past year.

What made the outlet different from most is that all of the merchandise came from Bon-Ton's full-line stores, rather than having goods made specifically for the clearance center. She declined to provide any other information. The sale will run for 10 to 12 weeks.

"If we can get something down in this end of the mall that's a high-touch, this will take off".

The list includes multiple brands operated by Bon-Ton: Bergner's, Bon-Ton, Boston Store, Carson's, Elder-Beerman, Herberger's and Younkers.

Younkers also operates stores at Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids and at Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville.

"I like it better than Kohl's", said Pataki, who likes the department store's shoe selection and recently bought a pair of boots there.
