"The Shape of Water", Guillermo del Toro's romantic ode to the horror films of his youth, dominated the 90th Academy Awards nominations on Tuesday (January 23), picking up a leading 13 nominations.

Rounding out the Best Picture category are Call Me By Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

"I think that there's a piece of the black experience that is communicated in the film and through Daniel's performance that people of color recognize and haven't seen and that people not of color needed to see as well", Peele told Reuters.

Greta Gerwig has landed a best director nomination for Lady Bird, one of nine films shortlisted for the best picture award. Nominated for Call Me By Your Name, he is the third-youngest person to ever be nominated for the category. She has already won Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild trophies for the role. Will Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri be able to continue its momentum? This category is packed with so many fantastic movies because there were just more good movies overall this year than previous ones. How diverse are this year's nominations?

These topics appear to have had an impact on this year's nominations, which are largely free of embarrassing exclusions and the kind of all-white line-ups that led to the #OscarsSoWhite campaign on social media.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg were surprise omissions from the Best Actor in a Supporting Role list.

Jordan Peele, the film's writer-director, was also nominated for both best original screenplay and best director, making him only the fifth black director to be shortlisted in the latter category.

In the acting categories, Denzel Washington and Willem Dafoe received well-deserved nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

Following sexual assault allegations against Kevin Spacey, Christopher Plummer stepped into the role of J. Paul Getty in "All the Money in the World" and shot his scenes in just 10 days.

While not a blunder of Envelopegate proportions, the Oscars website accidentally put up the full list of nominations while Tuesday's announcement was still under way and before the nominees in numerous major categories had been officially revealed. Roger Deakins has got his 14th nomination in cinematography for Blade Runner 2049 which makes him the most nominated cinematographer of all time but not one single even. Meryl Streep has been nominated for 19th time now for her performance in The Post directed by Steven Spielberg and the film has also got a best picture nomination. "We're seeing more diversity than we have in the past, but there's still a long way to go". I was in a newsroom when Alfonso Cuaron became the first Latino to win Best Director for 2013's Gravity. Insights' review of The Last Jedi referred to the film as "a bold statement, a film that sets up the new status quo for Episode IX". Human error at last year's show led to "La La Land" mistakenly being named the best picture victor before the actual victor, "Moonlight", was announced.

The US actor recently became the subject of sexual harassment allegations which may have hurt his chances of an Oscar nomination.

The dark drama is one of the favourites for best picture, and winning that without a best director nomination certainly isn't impossible - Ben Affleck managed it with Argo in 2013. According to sources, "I am honored beyond measure by this nomination for a film I love, a film that stands in defense of press freedom, and inclusion of women's voices in the movement of history", she said.

The ceremony will take place at the famous Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on 4th March and the Indian telecast will be at 7 am on 5th March.
