The sheriff's office said that just before 8 a.m., an active shooter was reported at Italy High School in Italy, Texas.

A 16-year-old male suspect was taken into custody without incident after shooting the 15-year-old girl, officials said.

According to the Texas Tribune, Italy High School has students in 6th through 12th grades. The schools are still locked down.

"This is a trying time for our community and our school", he said. Officials confirmed in a news conference that the suspect was a student, and he left the school building immediately after firing shots in the cafeteria.

It's unclear what led to the shooting.

Both the high school and Stafford Elementary School were put under lock down. He said it was also working to make sure grief counselling was available for students. Neither knew the girl's condition, and Parkland spokeswoman April Foran said she could give no information.

They said at about 9 a.m. that students at Italy High School were being moved, "under guard", to a different location.

Joffre says the district is working to reunite parents with their children.

One student was injured after being shot at Italy High School Monday morning.

Sgt. Joe Fitzgerald of the Ellis County Sheriff's Office says the female student was airlifted to a hospital in Dallas following the shooting early Monday in the small town of Italy (IT-lee), 45 miles (70 kilometers) south of Dallas. Murray declined to release additional details.
