17 killed in fire at plastic godown in Bawana Industrial Area

In a tweet, another minister of Delhi, Satyender Jain, tweeted: "Learnt about a serious fire incident in a private factory at Bawana". 15 fire tenders were rushed to the spot and soon contained the level 4 category fire.

Fire officials said the victims were trapped inside the factory as there was no exit route, The Times of India reported. "A search and rescue operation is on", he added.

North Delhi Mayor, Preeti Agrawal told ANI, "I received information about the incident on phone at around 9 pm & we immediately rushed to the spot".

While the fire department said the blaze occurred at a firecracker storage unit, the DCP had said they are yet to confirm this.

The bodies are kept at the mortuary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital while the two injured people, including 40-year-old Sunita Devi, are admitted to Maharshi Valmiki hospital.


He also said police would register a case. The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into it. The fire was reported in Sector 5 of Bawana Industrial area. "May those who are injured recover quickly". Earlier, the police had said that Jain was running the unit in partnership with one Lalit Goel.

Images from the factory were heart wrenching, showing families, including women hugging each other while being charred to death as the fire spread from the basement to the other floor.

The officer also said that it has apprehended Manoj Jain.

The fire quickly spread upwards from the basement, trapping almost two dozen workers on the upper floors, said an official at the capital´s emergency service.
