"I think you people are surprised". "I'm not saying I have or haven't", he said.

Trump's relationship with Kim has been primarily distinguished by escalating barbs and insults.

The U.S. -based Web site 38 North reports that significant tunneling excavation is under way at North Korea's Punggye-ri nuclear test site, suggesting the area is being prepared for a future nuclear test.

Trump has mocked Kim's weight and called him "little rocket man" in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly.

The Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang next month have always been overshadowed by geopolitical tensions, with the North repeatedly test-firing missiles it says are capable of reaching the U.S. mainland, and detonating its most powerful nuclear device to date. Kim has dismissed Trump as a "dotard" and "frightened dog" in public statements. Putin said only talks could resolve the standoff.

The talks resulted in the decision that North Korea would participate in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, in February. "Hopefully, a lot of good things are going to work out".

Trump claimed credit Wednesday for the inter-Korean dialogue, saying North Korea was feeling the pressure of a USA -led campaign of sanctions over its nuclear weapons and missile development.

In another article on 38North, Alexander Vorontsov, the head of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russia Academy of Sciences, was quoted as saying that North Korean diplomats were extremely serious about the possibility of war between North Korea and the U.S.

Earlier this week, it was reported the considering a "bloody nose" strategy with North Korea that would involve "targeted strikes", as Independent Journal Review reportedly previously.
