Is Paul Pogba Manchester United's next leader?

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has hailed Jesse Lingard's ability after the Englishman scored another goal in the club's 2-0 win over Everton.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways on New Year's Day, with the Frenchman playing a starring role, and Mourinho was quick to hit back at the United legend. "It's just the way football is", he sneered.

"Paul [Pogba] tries to do his best all the time". I think Scholes will be in history as a phenomenal player, not as a pundit.

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard grabbed the second-half goals which settled the contest but it was Pogba who was the beating heart of their renaissance after a lifeless first 45 minutes.

Scholes singled out Paul Pogba, the club's record signing, after his anonymous performance in the weekend draw with Southampton. "I had not one more player to select, even Chris Smalling was on the bench but he could only play in an emergency situation".

Was Mourinho right to respond to Scholes' comments or is this a further example of some people's opinions that the United boss is in the midst of a meltdown which will ultimately lead to his inevitable departure from the club?

Former Mancehster United captain, Michael Carrick, recently suggested that he saw potential in Pogba to fill his former position as United skipper in the coming years.

Wayne Rooney in focus against Manchester United

"One thing is to be a young talent, and another thing is to be a very good player", United manager Jose Mourinho said after the game, according to Sky Sports. "If he is 25 per cent he will be quite happy".

"I think they would love to be here", he said.

He then hinted that Scholes could be jealous of Pogba since the French maestro makes more money than the Englishman during his United days.

Lukaku may be back Mourinho said striker Romelu Lukaku, left out against his old club after a clash of heads in United's previous game, could be back for Friday's FA Cup tie against Derby.

United have been linked with a number of players in the transfer window, but Mourinho remained non-committal in terms of additions in January.

Lingard was unsafe throughout and got the goal he deserved, his seventh in his last nine league games, to show why he is now keeping Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of the team.

Fans voted Paul Pogba as the man of the match after the victory. Third-placed Chelsea, trail United by two points but could overtake them if they manage to beat arch-rivals Arsenal on Wednesday.
