Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthplace has officially become National Historical Park, in a move to mark his birthday, which is observed on the third Monday of January each year as a United States federal holiday.

President Donald Trump has signed a bill to create a national historic park in Atlanta honoring Martin Luther King Jr. "We expect a great turnout this year as we have partnered with fellow nonprofits and the faith-based community to offer a range of exciting options".

Individuals, groups, and families have the opportunity to help maintain local beaches, support community members in need, or revitalize outdoor spaces. Day through your choice of community service projects. All are welcome for light refreshments, coffee and card making for Meals on Wheels clients. All are welcome to attend the service. The march will begin at 11 front of P.E. Monroe Auditorium and extend approximately two miles to the Ridgeview Recreation Center.

Additionally, the Volunteer Center's Friends Outside program is hosting a clothing and blanket drive that will kick off on MLK Day. Celebration Jan. 16 at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 S. Fifth St. From the thousands of children who marched and were jailed in the Birmingham Children's March to Ruby Bridges and the many others who bravely integrated schools, to 15-year-old Claudette Colvin who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus nine months before Rosa Parks and so many more, our nation's history is filled with fearless children who stood up for what was right.
