Trump Is Lying About Aid to Pakistan, Foreign Minister Says

"Pakistan has fought the war against terrorism primarily out of its own resources and at a great cost to its economy, and that even more importantly the huge sacrifices made by Pakistan", it said.

Pakistan civilian and military chiefs on Tuesday rejected "incomprehensible" USA comments and summoned American Ambassador David Hale to explain Trump's tweet.

Shah reportedly called for Pakistan to review its relationship with the United States.

The White House warning came after the US ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, told reporters in NY that "there are clear reasons" for the Trump administration to withhold $255 million in assistance to Pakistan.

Pakistan's defense ministry hit back at the president, tweeting the country has received "invective & mistrust" from the U.S. He reiterated longstanding allegations that Pakistan gives "safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan".

On Monday, Trump said the US had "foolishly" given Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid in the last 15 years and had gotten nothing in return but "lies & deceit". Analysts still rule out a complete breakdown in relations between Islamabad and Washington.

But a sizable portion of the payments under CSF are tied to Pakistan's actions against terrorism - specifically the Haqqani Network, an Afghan Taliban affiliate - that must be certified by the administration for congress to clear the bill.

Pakistani UN Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi responded that her country's fight against terrorism is not based on any consideration of aid but on national interests and principles.

US officials have long accused Pakistan of allowing terror networks to operate within the country's borders.

"The real challenges in Afghanistan were political infighting, massive corruption, phenomenal growth of drug production and expansion of ungoverned spaces inside Afghanistan full of sanctuaries for multiple global terrorist organizations, posing a serious and direct threat to Afghanistan, its neighbors and the entire region", read Tuesday's Pakistani statement.

Describing Pakistan as an independent nuclear power, the defense minister said it was not possible for Washington to dictate terms to Islamabad by withholding aid, and warned the USA against any attempt to bring the war in Afghanistan to Pakistan's soil.

Afghanistan and rival India praised Trump for blaming Pakistan.

"We have contributed and sacrificed the most in fighting worldwide terrorism and carried out the largest counterterrorism operation anywhere in the world" in Pakistan's tribal regions, Lodhi said.

The two countries, he added, maintain an "all-weather strategic partnership" and China intends to further deepen its cooperation with Pakistan in all fields.

The prime minister's statement said the real challenges in Afghanistan were political infighting, massive corruption, phenomenal growth of drug production, and the expansion of ungoverned spaces inside Afghanistan full of sanctuaries for multiple worldwide terrorist organizations that pose a direct threat to Afghanistan, its neighbors, and the region.

"The U.S. needs to understand Pakistan foreign policy through the frame of its historical rivalry with India". Pakistan has increasingly turned for economic support to northern neighbour China, which is investing tens of billions in transportation links and power generation as it extends its strategic footprint across Asia.
