Gruden returns to Oakland as Raiders head coach

"But I know you are looking forward to getting back to coaching".

DICK VERMEIL: Vermeil had a successful seven-year run as coach of Philadelphia from 1976-82, taking the Eagles to their first Super Bowl following the 1980 season. "More specifically, the source says the early years are much closer to $5 million annually than $10 million". "We congratulate you as you head back to the sideline with the Raiders".

Sean McDonough is really going to miss his ESPN partner Jon Gruden on "Monday Night Football" and gave an awkward fist bump to prove it. St. Louis won just nine games his first two years before breaking through with the Super Bowl title in the 1999 season behind quarterback Kurt Warner.

The Raiders fired Jack Del Rio after the team went 6-10 following a season in which they made the playoffs with a record of 12-4.

The Raiders have complied with the "Rooney Rule" and interviewed minority candidates for the job, according to National Football League spokesman Joe Lockhart.

Even with that said, however, this has the feeling of a farce to it, but then again, it would be the Raiders to be front and center in it. Gruden has vast football knowledge, but there is a good reason for his firing so many years ago. He has been out of coaching since being fired by Tampa Bay after the 2008 season. Overall, Gruden is 95-81 in 11 seasons.

Gruden seemed touched by the remarks but didn't want to step on a future official announcement.

Personally, I enjoy Gruden as an analyst, though he is sometimes comical and overzealous, and his commentary during the Steelers-Bengals game regarding Vontaze Burfict and JuJu Smith-Schuster was nothing short of idiotic.

So this is really his last game in the booth, huh?
