Captain Marvel casts actor DeWanda Wise

The cast of Marvel's forthcoming Captain Marvel movie just keeps getting better: first they locked Brie Larson into the title role, then they brought Jude Law aboard.

The plot follows Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident. She is now fresh off a role in She's Gotta Have It on Netflix, but no word on who she is playing is available at this time.

So let's dive into a brief bit of theorizing.

As for Monica Rambeau, she held the Captain Marvel mantle during her first appearance in The Amazing Spiderman #16 in 1982, but has come into her own and is now known as Photon or Spectrum. Rambeau is a lieutenant in the New Orleans harbor patrol. Out of Marvel's 21 films, this is the first to feature a female lead superhero, unless you count the upcoming Ant-Man & The Wasp, which features former Lost star Evangeline Lilly co-starring with Paul Rudd.

With Captain Marvel, she is as powerful a character as we've ever put in a movie. However, this all remains speculation until we find out who Wise has been cast as (we still don't know which villain Ben Mendelsohn is playing the film!).

Thus, Monica Rambeau is particularly well situated to be introduced as a supporting character in Captain Marvel's new movie. From what we know about Captain Marvel, Monica's addition would make a lot of sense. Danvers becomes a superhero after her DNA fuses with an alien's after a vehicle accident.

"Captain Marvel" is set to open March 8, 2019.
