"But I knew this team and this brotherhood, and I owed it to all my coaches and all my teammates".

Jack Del Rio was sacked on New Year's Eve after Oakland's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, fueling rumors of Jon Gruden as the Raiders next head coach.

He said the Oakland Raiders are his childhood team and he appreciated the opportunity to serve as head coach. Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News reports that New York Jets offensive coordinator John Morton will be a target of Gruden's should he officially be tabbed by the Raiders. Imagine going up to your girlfriend of three years and saying, "I'm going to propose to this other girl I dated from 1999 to 2001 and if she says no, then I'll probably propose to you". According to Bair, Davis "played coy" when asked about Gruden. But again, Gruden has not coached since 2008.

The Raiders do now have a coach who received a contract extension last season. Del Rio said his first two years were great, while this year was a great disappointment. In his first season in Tampa, Gruden got his revenge as he led the Bucs to a 12-4 regular season and crushed the Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII, 48-21.

The Raiders' six-win dropoff was the second-largest in franchise history from one season to the next.

Several players said they know Gruden, who was in the booth for the Raiders' Christmas night loss to the Eagles, more for his work on "Monday Night Football".

Vea, in the team's worst-kept secret, confirmed to The Seattle Times that he is planning to hire an agent in the coming days and declare for the National Football League draft.
