According to Italian broadcaster Premium Sport, the Toffees are in the last stage of negotiations with Besiktas, as both clubs look to put the final touches to an agreement that would see Tosun move to Merseyside.

Fanatik claim Everton officials will tonight meet with Besiktas vice president Ahmet Nur Cebi to conclude the deal for Cenk Tosun.

Tosun scored 20 goals last season to help Besiktas win the Turkish Super Lig and he has continued that rich vein of form in front of goal this term with 13 goals, including four in the Champions League.

The Turkish worldwide striker has attracted the interest of a number of Premier League clubs, and Everton were far from the first to identify his talents.

"It is still one of the major problems that we have". We can't cloud the fact that we've got more penalties than anyone else which has contributed to a few pints but that won't always happen so we need to strengthen.

He added: "Players who are already in, like Sandro, have not picked up the pace of the Premier League and haven't been able to show what they showed in Spain".

"And young (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin is battling away".

"I need more goals in the side than we have at the moment if we are just to maintain our position", he said.

A striker and two full-backs remain the manager's January priorities, with a deal for Sevilla midfielder Steven N'Zonzi, who played for him at Blackburn, only likely if he can sell first to create room in his squad.
