Peruvians celebrate Christmas Eve with hugs and good wishes

Christian men, women and children gathered in the Holy Catholic Family Church situated at Moulana Azad Road here to celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ.

Delhi was coloured in white and red as the residents sported santa caps, doubling celebratory mode of the festival and the extended weekend, as well. It is a day set aside to recognize the birth of their Saviour, Jesus Christ, and to give thanks to God for the gift of salvation.

Sermons and prayers during the midnight mass (in Kannada) at St. Philomena's Church were conducted by Bishop Rev. Dr. K.A. William. "Kashmiris are peaceful", said a local devotee Margaret Mary after Christmas prayers", adding "Peace will return soon to Kashmir by Jesus's grace".

The streets of Panaji and Margao, the two main cities of Goa, were packed with vehicles till the wee hours as people participated in the traditional dance parties after the prayer service.

With festive fervor in the air ahead of Christmas, preparations are in full swing in various pockets of the country, ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on Monday. The Christmas celebrations began with midnight mass late on Saturday night in all the churches of Hyderabad.


Attending the Christmas celebrations in Gulmarg, Vice Chancellor Jammu Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation, Rafi Ahmad Mir said Gulmarg is one the highest skiing resorts in the world that not only offers skiers powdery slopes but is also a breathtaking place to visit for a tourist.

The festival mood was also visible in Mumbai.

"I could only see a couple of differences in the Christmas celebration: one, a large number of people throng churches and people decorate outside their homes X-Mas trees, which we generally do not do here".

Furthermore, a private hotel here erected a 63-feet-tall steel Christmas tree using 1.2 tons of steel, built by 30 workmen over a span of seven days.

Kolkata celebrated Christmas by holding midnight masses and carols that continued through the day.
