At least 27 people died and 5 others were injured after a bus fell into a river in Dubi area of Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan.

The driver apparently lost control while attempting to pass another vehicle in foggy conditions.

Hundreds of Hindu, and some Muslim, devotees from towns in Rajasthan and the neighbouring states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh travel to the Ramdev temple on every Tuesday and Saturday for prayers.

Death toll may rise, police said. The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital.

Early on Saturday morning, a bus carrying around 44 passengers plunged several metres into a river from a bridge in Rajasthan.

"The accident in Sawai Madhopur is extremely tragic". Many of them were going to pay a visit to a temple in Malarna Chour in the district, Sawai Madhopur Superintendent of Police Mamman Singh told PTI. Seven people were injured.

Police did not release any information on what caused the accident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolence to the families of the victims. "State Government is closely monitoring the situation, including rescue operations and providing all possible assistance to those affected".
