Real Madrid vs Barcelona: War for Griezmann begins

It was only last summer that Manchester United were heavily linked to the Gallic goal machine - who arrived at Atletico from Real Sociedad in August 2014 - but despite the rumours he signed a new deal to keep him at the club through to 2021.

Should Barcelona be found guilty of the violations, a punishment severe as a two-window transfer ban may be handed out.

Ahead of the weekend's Clasico, Barcelona face more Madrid problems with Atletico filing a complaint with Federation Internationale de Football Association over the Catalans illegal approaches to Antoine Griezmann, reports The Guardian.

"Barcelona have not negotiated with any player, so we understand that no irregularity has been committed", said a club spokesman to MARCA.

"If Bartomeu met with Griezmann's family as the newspapers say, then there may well have been an approach", Amor said.

"Griezmann has a long contract and this cannot be permitted, while the club also considers it could affect the competition (La Liga) in which Barcelona are now top and Atletico are second".

"I know that he needs to grow".

Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres hopes to see teammate Antoine Griezmann reject interest from elsewhere and continue his career at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico's aggressive response to Barcelona's behaviour indicates that they have no intention of selling their star striker, despite the fact that the release clause in his contract is an eye-watering €100m (£88.4m).

Barcelona lead the league with Atletico their closest challengers six points behind in second.

"He is a player of Atletico until June 30 and it's another matter if he leaves or not".
