Florida Atlantic offered Lane Kiffin a chance to resurrect his career as a head coach, and he might not be leaving Boca Raton anytime soon.

FAU president Dr. John Kelly told ESPN that out-of-state applications to the university went up 35 percent for the fall 2018 semester.

The official name for Tuesday's postseason matchup may be the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl, but the lineage of the two coaches offers the much easier-off-the-tongue subtitle. The Owls will bowl for the first time since 2008 under ex-Miami coach Howard Schnellenberger, and the third time ever. The Owls were a ideal 8-0 in Conference USA play and trounced North Texas 41-17 in the conference title game on December 2. The team went undefeated in conference play and that has prompted the school to approach Kiffin about a new contract.

As part of his eventful Tuesday, Kiffin appeared on The Paul Finebaum Show and opined on Nick Saban's recent criticism of college football's new early signing period, which begins Wednesday and runs through Friday.

Kiffin ranked 80th among FBS head coaches with $950,000 in total pay for 2017, according to USA Today.

BUZZ: FAU is riding a nine-game winning streak, and the Owls have averaged 45.4 points and 532.2 yards in those nine games.

"And we haven't done anything else differently, so it has to be Lane", Kelly said to ESPN.

After skipping out on Tennessee after one season in Knoxville, Kiffin was sacked from his dream job, Southern California. FAU hired Kiffin, son of legendary defensive National Football League and college coach Monte Kiffin, after he did time as Alabama's offensive coordinator under Nick Saban. They're hungry, and every time we win, it's like they've just won the Super Bowl.
