He declined to release the age of the victims, where they were found in the house, whether a weapon was recovered, whether the bodies showed signs of trauma, and who found the bodies. The couple were found in their home, which was up for sale.

Mr Sherman founded the Apotex in 1974 and stepped down as chief executive in 1974.

Post-mortem examinations would be conducted and authorities are treating the deaths as suspicious, a Toronto Police spokesman said. "Dr. Sherman gave his life to the singular goal of our organization - innovating for patient affordability", the company said.

Sherman, the 75-year-old founder of generic drug giant Apotex, was one of the richest men in the country, with an estimated net worth of $4.6 billion approximately, according to reports.

Lawsuits from family members, alleging they were cut out of their share of the company back in 1967, had dogged Mr Sherman for decades.

In a statement, Apotex said Sherman grew the company from its "humble" roots to become a successful pharmaceutical firm with 6,000 employees in 21 sites across Canada.

A neighbour said that despite their vast wealth, the Shermans lived a low-key life. He asked if he could duck under the police tape to get inside, and was told no.

Sarah Alvi lives with her family across the road from the Sherman home and has known the couple for four years.

The news shocked friends and business associates, who have started posting tributes online. "Whether it was education, health care or community centres she was at the centre of raising money and giving money", he said.

Ontario's health minister, Dr. Eric Hoskins, said the couple had been discovered dead. My dear friends Barry and Honey Sherman have been found dead.

"Today I am gutted by the loss of Honey and Barry Sherman".

Apotex described their deaths as shocking and tragic, while other statements praised the Shermans' numerous philanthropic efforts.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau were also among those to offer a tribute to the couple through social media.

Const. David Hopkinson, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, said police hope to receive the results of the autopsies later on Saturday.
