But after a rough start with an interception and just four first downs on the first four offensive possessions Sunday against the Houston Texans, things started to look as the 49ers had envisioned under the new quarterback.

DeAndre Hopkins had 149 yards receiving and two touchdowns, but lost a fumble in the fourth quarter with the Texans down by 7.

Tom Savage is taken to the locker room after scary scene in Houston Sunday.

Savage was hit by 49ers defensive end Elvis Dumervil as he threw an incomplete pass on third down, ESPN reported.

After leaving the field, Savage went into the injury tent to be examined by team medical personnel.

Savage tried repeatedly to enter the game on the next series.

Needless to say, though, this game between a pair of teams playing for nothing more than pride and paychecks takes a back seat to the health of Savage - and how Houston has seemingly mismanaged it.

It's been a constant theme this season for the Texans, who'd already lost Deshaun Watson, J.J. Watt, Whitney Mercilus, and D'Onta Foreman for the year, and sent 14 players to injured reserve, tied for the fourth most among all National Football League teams.

Yates led a touchdown drive as the Texans trailed 13-9 at halftime. San Francisco cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon injured his knee in the fourth quarter.
