CNN Botches Report on Trump Administration's Early Access to the DNC Leaks

He said the person appeared to be a Trump supporter, pointing to information that had already been released publicly by WikiLeaks. But the copy of the email obtained by AP shows it was sent afterward.

Trump Jr told House Intelligence Committee investigators that he didn't remember receiving the email.

US President Donald Trump called CNN "fake news" and suggested that the mistake CNN made in its report about alleged collusion between WikiLeaks and his team was "purposeful". Brian Ross should have not been taken off the Trump beat by ABC, but should have been fired outright for incompetence in his eagerness to further tarnish Michael Flynn.

The email was provided to investigators working on the Congressional inquiry into alleged collusion between the Trump campaign team and Russian officials during the 2016 U.S. election. Because Sept. 4 coincided with the day Trump tweeted about Wikileaks (he shared an article from The Gateway Pundit), CNN seems to have jumped to the conclusion that it was inspired by this very email. It directed the recipients to Democratic National Committee emails posted on Wikileaks and emails hacked from Colin Powell, which were released by DC Leaks - not Wikileaks.

The September 4 email was sent during the final stretch of the 2016 presidential race - on the same day that Trump Jr. first tweeted about WikiLeaks and Clinton. The panel's interview with Trump Jr. was supposed to be private. But the source says was not a valid email for Mr. Trump. The correction undercut the main thrust of CNN's story, which had been seized on by critics of President Trump as evidence of coordination between WikiLeaks and the Trump campaign.

Futerfas characterized the message as one of thousands that Trump Jr. and the campaign received "from individuals all over the world with opinions, suggestions, ideas and commentary". Congressional investigators are looking into the email exchange.

This new revelation also raises again the question of why Trump Jr. did not contact the Federal Bureau of Investigation over any of this, as one is supposed to do when approached by foreign agents with offers of help for a presidential campaign.

President Trump also attacked CNN for the wrongful coverage as he attended a rally in Pensacola, Florida, late Friday.

Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr. took to Twitter to criticize CNN for not fully retracting the story instead of correcting it.
