East Contra Costa Fire Sends Strike Team to Los Angeles County

Over 125 firefighters have been on the scene, and water-dropping helicopters are reportedly being used to quench the flames.

The fire broke out before dawn Wednesday on the east side of Interstate 405 in the Sepulveda Pass and raced up steep slopes into neighbourhoods at the top. There are no reports of injuries, but the flames are dangerously close to the Getty Center and buildings nearby.

Misraje, who lives in the hills herself off Mulholland Drive, was staying put and telling her members and any clients to listen to authorities, stay in their homes if their area was not being evacuated to keep the roads free, and to stay inside to avoid the contaminated air.

Just north in Ventura County the Thomas blaze continued unabated, after erupting in the hills of oak and scrub north of Santa Paula, powered by strong seasonal guests known as Santa Ana winds.

Many schools and local businesses in both counties have been closed.

"Winds have died down to allow fire department to get some control, but high winds/Santa Ana winds coming tonight", Freeman said via text message.

Some 30 structures were destroyed by the Creek Fire by Tuesday evening, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. As of 5:40 a.m., zero percent of the blaze has been contained.

Three firefighters were injured and hospitalized in stable condition, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti declared a state of emergency while 11 Los Angeles Unified schools canceled Wednesday classes. He joined a chorus of officials urging residents to immediately evacuate if they are told to do so.

The fire had burned about 50 acres and is quickly spreading, Stewart said.

More than 250,000 homes lost power, utilities said.
