Chandigarh worst in India in crime against elderly: NCRB

In a dubious distinction, Andhra Pradesh stands fourth in the country in the sexual harassment cases, according to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) on Thursday.

Delhi registered 40 per cent (1,996) of the total number of rape cases in the 19 cities and almost 29 per cent cases each of cruelty meted out by husband and his relatives and dowry deaths across the country.

While 9.5% of all Indian Penal Code crimes were reported from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Kerala recorded crime rates substantially higher than the national average of 233 per lakh population.

Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh reported the highest incidence of rape with 4,882 cases (12.5 percent) and 4,816 (12.4 percent) respectively followed by Maharashtra 4,189 (10.7 percent) previous year, according to the NCRB data.

Delhi UT reported the highest crime rate (160.4) compared to the national average rate of 55.2. The city had seen 107 cases of juvenile delinquency in 2014 and 128 in 2015.

Murder decreased by 5.2 per cent (from 32,127 cases in 2015 to 30,450 in 2016), rioting 5 per cent (from 65,255 cases in 2015 to 61,974 in 2016 ), dacoity 4.5 per cent (from 3,972 cases in 2015 to 3,795 in 2016) and robbery 11.8 per cent (from 36,188 cases in 2015 to 31,906 in 2016).


Delhi city accounted for 38.8% of total IPC crime reported in the cities followed by Bengaluru (8.9%) and Mumbai (7.7%). However, the number of cases reported has come down by 10.6% from 2015.

The state of Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of cases (2,639) of cyber crimes accounting for 21.4% followed by Maharashtra with 19.3% (2,380 cases) and Karnataka with 8.9% (1101 cases). The next highest incidence was recorded in Maharashtra, at nearly 10 per cent, while Puducherry witnessed 8.6 per cent of such crimes.

This year, a total of 8,132 cases of human trafficking were reported in the country with West Bengal reporting the highest number of cases (3,579) sharing almost 44% of the total cases followed by Rajasthan (1,422) sharing 17.9% of such cases in the country. A total of 1,06,900 ammunition was seized during 2016.

Among the other states, Uttar Pradesh (UP) recorded the highest number of serious offences like murder.

Among the cities of India, Delhi had the highest crime rate, followed by Kochi, Jaipur, Patna, and Indore for only IPC crimes while Coimbatore is the safest city in a list of 19 metropolitan cities. There is an increase in crimes including rapes, kidnapping/abductions, offences against children, atrocities against Dalits and tribals, senior citizens and the number of juveniles involved in crimes.
