Chinese star Liu Yifei has been cast as the titular character in Disney's live-action remake "Mulan".

The 1998 animation featured hit songs including "Reflection" and "I'll Make a Man Out of You", but filmmaker Caro revealed the new adaptation will not be a musical - unlike the other live-action Disney remakes.

Chinese actress Liu Yifei has been given the tick of approval from Disney fans following accusations of "whitewashing" in Hollywood.

Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, acts as a brand ambassador for some of the world's top fashion brands and recently starred in the CHinese fantasy film Once Upon a Time. The 1998 film was so well-received by critics and the public, earning USD304 million (RM1.24 billion) worldwide as well as Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

Hollywood has been under fire in recent years for casting white actors for characters that were not supposed to be white.

She is set to play Hua Mulan, a legendary Chinese warrior who takes her aged father's place in the army during the Southern and Northern Dynasty (420-589).

Casting directors were looking for a young ethnic Chinese woman who had martial arts skills, star quality and could speak English, the report said. Besides being fluent in English having spent some years living in NY, the 30-year-old is also one of the most successful actresses of this generation.

Yifei is one of China's most popular actresses since breaking out with a series of TV dramas and is fluent in English having lived in NY for part of her childhood and even starred in 2008's "The Forbidden Kingdom" alongside Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

According to IMDb, we should plan on heading to the theaters to see "Mulan" in 2019.
