Black is a black male, 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds.

DPS released a statement on its Twitter page identifying the trooper as 41-year-old Damon Allen.

Lonny Haschel, a public information officer with the Texas Highway Patrol, says,"It takes time for the Texas Rangers, the investigators to come in and analyze every bit of physical evidence at the scene".

Black has a previous criminal history that includes evading arrest and violence toward law enforcement, authorities say. "Trooper Damon Allen was a loving husband and father of three, and we ask for your prayers for his entire family and his many friends and colleagues during the hard days ahead".

Hours later, the Waller County Sheriff's Office said the suspect's vehicle was spotted in Hempstead, more than 100 miles (161 kilometers) south of Fairfield.
