According to officials, the joint operation of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police started late on Monday night.

Police said that the identity of three LeT militants killed in the encounter at Magam, Handwara, is being ascertained.

The security forces on Tuesday neutralised three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in North Kashmir's Magam area of Handwara region of Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir.

As the joint team intensified the searches, the hiding militants opened fire triggering a gunfight.

Army's Srinagar based Chinar Corp, however, confirmed the killing of only two militants. "3 Pakistani LeT terrorists killed, arms and ammunition recovered", said IGP Kashmir, Munir Khan.

The operation is still underway and the Indian Army is trying to gun down the terrorists. Among the slain militants was Owaid, a son of Zaki Rehman Maki and nephew of Zakiur Rehman Lakhavi, the mastermind of 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the police and the Army had said.

"But I would like to reassure that we are taking measures to plug gaps along the LoC". Smart components are being brought.
