Dimitrov had to wait until the eighth game to break back for a second time and a tight set then ended with a fiercely fought battle, the Bulgarian converting his fifth set point on the Goffin serve to prevent a tie-break.

Dimitrov, playing the season finale for the first time, joins Group Boris Becker victor Roger Federer as the only unbeaten singles players, and the Bulgarian will fight for the champion berth against American Jack Sock on Saturday.

Dimitrov made five break and pulled one break point.

Grigor Dimitrov set his sights on winning his first Grand Slam after his dramatic victory at the ATP Finals on Sunday gave him the biggest title of his career.

Grigor Dimitrov consoles David Goffin after the final. "So when my body's allowing me to do this kind of preparation, I feel I already have an advantage over any other player". Honestly, I don't know what to do tomorrow.

Goffin's adjustments paid off early as he broke Dimitrov's first two service games either side of losing his own, before settling down to control the opener.

He hit 17 unforced errors in the first set, majority since the second half of the set.

The sixth seed started where he left off by making a blistering start, winning the first three games.

The defeat came as a shock because Federer had remained unbeaten in his previous six clashes against Goffin. "I proved to myself that I can do it".

"It has been a tremendous two weeks for me", said Dimitrov.

Goffin grabbed his chance in the next game with a forehand victor and confidently served out the set to force the game into a decider. "But in the end, I was really happy about the way I played the match, I was really nervous towards the end of the match", Goffin said in his on court interview after the match.

Goffin was left serving for survival at 5-3 down and clawed his way back from 40-0 down to stay alive in an enthralling encounter, but a exhausted backhand into the net gifted Dimitrov the title in the next game. Not only does his opponent Grigor Dimitrov lead the head to head between the two players 4-1, but he hammered Goffin 6-0, 6-2 just four days ago in the tournament's Round Robin stage.
