While she was initially informed that she'd be able to gain access, the decision was apparently reversed after the government caught wind of a controversial incident from 2015, in which Perry donned a bright, glittery dress with sunflowers on it during a performance in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Perry's support of Taiwan's cause has been interpreted as a threat to China, resulting in her ban from the country.

"Can't wait to tune in with everyone to see the lovely show I know it will be, and already can't wait for next year! x", Hadid continued without giving a reason for her absence. Most recently, Katy Perry was denied a visa to perform there for her political messaging in 2015.

Victoria's Secret has not yet publicly commented on Perry's or Hadid's reported bans.

This controversy isn't the first to impact the fashion show.

On Thursday, Gigi Hadid announced on Twitter that she won't be walking in the fashion show. Katy Perry, who was slated to sing at the show, won't be able to make it to Shanghai, either.

After Hadid announced in August that she would come to Shanghai, many Chinese netizens pounced anew, warning her to stay away.

Whilst Gigi won't be strutting her stuff on the catwalk this year, her younger sister Bella, 21, is still expected to appear in the line-up alongside Victoria's Secret Angels Alessandra Ambrosio, Candica Swanepoel and Adriana Lima.

Speculation has also swirled over the participation of Russia's Julia Belyakova, Kate Grigorieva and Irina Sharipova, and Ukraine's Dasha Khlystun, after unconfirmed reports suggested they were denied Chinese visas.

Representatives for Hadid and Victoria's Secret did not respond to INSIDER's requests for comment about the situation.

It's unclear why Victoria's Secret thought hosting a lingerie show in Shanghai, China, was a good idea. It seems very tough to get a visa to China, indeed.
