Attorney General Sessions says now recalls meeting flagged in Russian Federation probe

In a letter to the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd said the Justice Department lawyers would make recommendations to Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein about whether an investigation should be opened or expanded, or whether a special counsel should be appointed, related to a host of issues of concern to Republicans.

Mr. Trump is frustrated with the continuing investigations into Russia's election meddling and possible ties to his campaign.

Mr Page told the House intelligence committee earlier this month that he had informed some members of the Trump campaign about the trip, including Mr Sessions.

Or, so Sessions tells the House Judiciary Committee.

Jordan has led the charge of GOP lawmakers calling for a special counsel investigation to be launched in addition to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

They include Donald Trump Jr., former campaign manager Paul Manafort, and Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor, Jared Kushner. Papadopoulos recently pled guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his communications with foreign nationals.

USA intelligence agencies have concluded that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election to help Republican Trump's campaign.

The Kremlin has repeatedly denied allegations of interfering in the US election and Trump denies any collusion between his campaign and Russian officials.

Sessions said that in all of his testimony, he could only do his "best" to answer all of the questions as he "understands them" and to the best of his memory.

President Donald Trump personally asked his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to help resolve the case of three UCLA men's basketball players who were arrested for shoplifting while in Hangzhou for a tournament last week, people familiar with the situation said Monday.

That prompted an angry backlash from Sessions. Al Franken, D-Minn., that "I did not have communications" with the Russians during the campaign and said he was "unaware" of contacts between others in the campaign and Russia.

Now, Sessions said he recalled a March 2016 meeting with Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

"My answers have not changed", Sessions said.

After the meeting, Sessions said, he did not have "any further knowledge" of additional contacts between the campaign and Russian officials. He said he mentioned in passing to Sessions that he was visiting Russian Federation and the then-senator had no reaction.

During an Oval Office meeting with the president on November 1, Pirro denounced Attorney General Jeff Sessions and his refusal to go after Clinton, who was Secretary of State when the deal was approved.

Mr Sessions said he does not remember speaking to Carter Page during the 2016 presidential campaign about a trip that the former foreign policy campaign adviser took to Russian Federation.

In terms of the CFIUS approval, Clinton has said she had nothing to do with it.

The hearing was starkly divided.

Sessions was cautious on that score.

The hearing is the first time Sessions will testify before the House Judiciary Committee, and members are also likely to press the attorney general on all the ways he has reshaped the Justice Department in his nine months on the job.

In his confirmation hearing in January, Sessions had pledged to senators he would recuse himself from matters involving Clinton, given his involvement with the Trump campaign.
